Sony NEX E50 1.8 First Impression

It has been hell long time since my last update. I was back in China for the last four months and had no access to the blogger..Anyway, it's always good to be back in Singapore and this blog too! Today I am bringing some fresh content here!

I just got a Sony E-mount lens 50mm F1.8 a few days ago. The reason that I bought this is that I need a good lens for taking the portrait. The large aperture makes the subject more outstanding and also allows faster shutter speed in the low light without increasing the ISO.

Here are some of my thoughts on this lens.

The built quality is great. It's about the same size and weight as the 18-55mm kit lens. The lens body is very solid and sturdy. There's no weird sound when it is focusing. The lens comes with the lens hood but it's a pity that no pouch is given.

The sharpness of this lens is definitely worth praising, even aperture open wide as F1.8. You can tell the difference straight away from the camera screen. The bokeh is also smooth and pleasing. It is definitely an excellent lens in portrait shooting.

There are indeed some drawbacks. First, it is not a macro lens. Thus it is difficult to shoot flowers, insects, etc. The magnification ratio is even worse than the 18-55mm kit lens (x0.16 compared to x0.3). So if you used to shoot some close-ups using the kit lens, I am afraid you will not be able to do so using the 50mm F1.8.

Another issue is that in some dim environment, the lens tends to get really hard in focusing on the right subject, compared to the snappy shutter under the sunlight. I am not so sure whether it's exceptional or a generic problem.

Overall, E50 1.8 is a great lens with excellent image quality and reasonable price. If you are looking for a new lens to add on to your NEX system after the kit lens, this is definitely the one you should go for.

Below are some pictures I've taken my camera has taken using the E50 1.8.
