iPad Mini - A Brief Comparison to Kindle Fire and iPad 2

 DSC05896

I now have three tablets in hand after my recent purchase of iPad mini. Kindle Fire and iPad 2 have served their purpose well. However, iPad mini eventually combined the strength of the two other tablets. This blog is about a brief comparison between the three tablets, which hopefully can give you an idea what tablet you are looking for.

In terms of built quality, Apple's products never fail to please its users. iPad mini is extremely light yet sturdy. Unlike iPad 2, its rear case is matte finished. It feels great to grab in hand, but it also has a problem that finger prints are easily left on the surface, especially in Singapore where my hands usually sweat a lot. iPad 2 now feels so much heavier after I get used to the weight of iPad mini. Kindle Fire is about the same size as iPad mini, but much thicker and heavier even though much of its body is manufactured using the plastic back cover.

Speaking of the screen resolution, it's around the same resolution across the three gadgets (1024×600 for Kindle Fire, 1024×768 for iPad 2 and iPad mini). However, due to smaller screen size, Kindle Fire has the highest pixel density, while iPad 2 and iPad mini are better off at the screen brightness and colours. In my personal opinion, the screen resolution of iPad mini is acceptable since I do not look at the screen as close as the way I look at my phone. The pixels are difficult to be distinguished. Some people may still find it too blurry if they have iPhone or iPad with retina display before.

On the application side, iOS still wins over Android on its app quality. Android apps are still struggling due to the fragmentation of the platform. Kindle Fire sometimes cannot get the latest update of some app on time due to compatibility issue. The only exception is that Kindle has a seamless support from its bookstore with wide range of variety. However, it makes less sense to read books on Kindle Fire compared to the normal e-ink paper Kindle as the screen is just of the same nature as iPad.

Three tablets have their own markets to tap on. Kindle Fire aims at consumers looking for cheap and easy-to-use tablet and is hoping to get the profit through their online sales of books and other content. iPad 2 is definitely for entertainment as well as other personal needs. It is kind of an all-in-one tablet. iPad mini, at first glance, may look just like an iPad 2 with smaller screen. But the form factor does make a difference when it comes to daily use. Now it is much easier to read on the transportation and carry around as an e-reader.

If I have to choose one among the three tablets, I will opt for iPad mini. It is simply because the combination of strengths on both sides, portable and powerful. If you have not got a tablet yet, go and take a look at it at the store, you will know what I mean.
