Call me too old-fashioned or out of date or whatever, I haven't tried 500px out until yesterday though I came across this name a couple of times. Judging by the name, I thought "nah, it's just another photo-sharing website". It is, but it is much more than that, and much better than I thought.
I have been using flickr for some time, but as an average user who doesn't log on frequently. Anyone who has used Flickr before should have known how it looks like: almost same old layout as 5 years ago (that's like half a century in technology), and I always get confused by the difference of sets and galleries and the UI is simply messy. It's probably because I am not a frequent user so that I don't find it handy. But that's how I feel when I see the website.
I believe you can tell the difference from the two UI above. It's obvious.
500px, is more like a desktop version of Instagram, and I love Instagram! But instead of uploading the photos taken by mobile phones, I need to upload those taken by my cameras and in fact I only choose the best to post.
Just take a look at the photos other users have put on the platform, you'll notice the difference. Most photos are produced by professional photographers and they are simply amazing. The layout is easy for browsing through and it's loading pretty fast.
Working pretty much like Instagram, you can click to like a photo, fave or comment a photo, which will be included in your fav photo tab. The website will calculate a score, called 'pulse' based on the number of views, likes, favs and comments. Photos of high scores will be featured in the 'Popular' page. 'Editor's Choice' page include pictures that are handpicked by the 500px team.
What we can do is through the +Add button, we can upload new photos, create new sets and create new stories. Stories are working more like some mini post, that is for special moments and events in life and you want to use more words than simple captions.
500px also have the Market space to put your photos on sale for digital download as well as canvas printing. The photos have to be qualified for sale such as minimum pixels on photo's long side and the payment could be made through cheques or PayPal. According to the website, photographers could receive around $2 per download and $60 per canvas print.
I have uploaded some of my photos to 500px and within a day I have received a few likes and comments. Not bad! (You can check out my 500px here )
Both Flickr and 500px provide service by charging a premium. Around $30 a year for Flickr and about $50 for 500px. By getting the 'awesome' account on 500px, you get to upload unlimited photos and can make your own portfolios without 500px's logo. It also has the privilege to choose subdomain and use Google Analytics to track the site traffic.
I guess 500px is not gonna replace Flickr completely. Rather than that, it's taking a share of the professional photographers away from Flickr. In fact, Flickr is still great for family and personal photo archive and it's difficult to get away if you've been using that for years. For professional photographers, 500px is definitely a great community to share and showcase your favourite work!
